Joe Lucas (1838–1908) was a Portuguese fisherman who settled in Laguna Beach around 1880. He became famous for greeting every stagecoach and visitor with an enthusiastic wave of his hat and the cry "Hellooo!". This tradition made him the first unofficial symbol of the city's hospitality.
